Each CD volume contains a comprehensive booklet written by Richard
Lester, giving a unique insight into some of the sonatas’ folk song
and dance origins. In a separate booklet entitled ‘Flamenco Sketches’
that accompanies the whole set, he explores some of the flamenco
melodies, harmonies and rhythms ingeniously woven into many sonatas.
The fandango, bulerias and seguidilla, together
with song/dances from other regions, like the jota, are
described with musical examples in colourful rhetoric that evokes a
spectacular and impassioned panorama of 18th century Spain.
Volume 7 containing some more recently discovered and authenticated
sonatas, is described in copious notes by W. Dean Sutcliffe, author of
the Keyboard Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti. |
